A third victim, 30-year-old Jorge Pederson of KVUE, was taken off life support after a shooting in downtown Austin early Sunday morning, which had already claimed the lives of 19-year-old Ryder Harrington and 21-year-old Sabitha Shan, a student at the University of Texas. The incident occurred around 2 a.m. outside a bar on West 6th Street, injuring over a dozen people. The gunman was killed by police.
Authorities reported that two patients remain in critical condition out of 14 taken to the hospital, with at least four already discharged. Investigators are in the early stages of the case, reviewing evidence and interviewing approximately 150 witnesses to determine the shooting’s context.
The FBI is probing the suspect’s background, looking into any ideological links, including references to Iran found on the suspect’s clothing. The firearm used was legally obtained, and the suspect did not appear to be a prior threat.
Austin Mayor Kirk Watson expressed pride in the emergency response and the community’s support, while security measures for upcoming events, such as South by Southwest, will remain unchanged. The investigation is ongoing, with additional updates expected soon, including body camera footage from related officer-involved shooting incidents. Police have asked anyone with related video or photos to submit them.
