Former Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings executive Tom Markwell has been arrested in Argentina on charges of committing over $2 million in fraud while serving as senior director of events from 2019 to 2023. He faces multiple counts of wire fraud, identity theft, and could potentially receive a minimum sentence of 20 years in prison if convicted.
The case began in October 2023 when Markwell and two co-defendants were accused of defrauding the cruise line through false invoices. Markwell, arrested by Interpol agents in Buenos Aires, allegedly used a fraudulent supply company called “The Gifting Company” and issued invoices that were below his approval limits. He pocketed money from these schemes, including direct payments to his girlfriend’s account, although there is no indication she is involved in illegal activities.
Markwell has nearly three decades of experience in the travel industry and served as the Senior Director of Events for Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings before the charges emerged. As of now, he is awaiting extradition to the U.S. for trial. This case represents one of the largest fraud incidents involving a cruise line executive, but the company has yet to comment on the situation.
