A recent road construction project near San Diego has introduced alternating white and orange stripes to delineate construction zones, aimed at alerting drivers and promoting safer driving. This pilot project, a collaboration between Caltrans and SANDAG Build NCC, uses these markings temporarily to indicate reduced speed limits and enhance visibility, especially at night. While drivers were initially unfamiliar with the stripes, the colors align with standard orange and white construction cones, helping convey the message.
The concept is not new; other states like Wisconsin, Kentucky, Texas, Michigan, and Washington have successfully implemented similar markings. Studies indicate these stripes can reduce lane departure accidents by 74% and decrease speeds by about 4 mph in construction zones. Accident data reveals ongoing safety concerns, with nearly 900 fatalities in construction zones in 2023. As the use of orange stripes expands, further data on their impact on safety will be monitored.
