On Thursday morning, Pasadena’s Colorado Boulevard experienced its first rainy Rose Parade in 20 years, with Michael Brooks among the eager attendees. Despite the downpour and his first-time experience, Brooks was undeterred, happy to honor his family’s tradition. The parade, which kicked off at 8 a.m., faced sustained rainfall, with significant amounts reported overnight.
As parade fans camped out in the rain, Tracy Tankersley expressed hope for dry weather, reminiscing about years when it cleared up. However, she and her family adapted to cold, solitary nights, making it a unique gathering experience despite the weather.
Many locals, including Loni Jones and Cheryl Conley, reflected on past rainy parades, emphasizing community spirit despite challenges. Food vendors like Kayla Montez sold tamales, maintaining high energy.
Historically, rain on New Year’s Day is rare in Los Angeles, with only 10% of the past days experiencing precipitation. This year’s theme, “The Magic of Teamwork,” celebrated notable figures like parade marshal Earvin “Magic” Johnson. Various floats and performances took place under the rain, showcasing community resilience and creativity, with Cal Poly’s student-built float winning the award for the Most Beautiful Entry.
