In Melbourne, Australia, Erin Patterson’s estranged husband, Simon Patterson, testified in court about his suspicions that Erin had tried to poison him and others with toxic mushrooms. Erin, 50, was convicted of murdering her in-laws, Don and Gale Patterson, and Gale’s sister, Heather Wilkinson, by serving them Beef Wellington made with Death Cap mushrooms. Simon, who had not eaten Erin’s meals due to fear of poisoning, had suffered serious health issues linked to meals she prepared and had previously suspected her of attempting to harm him.
Before trial, all charges against Simon related to poisoning were dropped. Erin’s lawyers sought to keep trial evidence secret, arguing that extensive media coverage would bias potential jurors in any retrial. She faces a possible life sentence for the murders and 25 years for attempted murder. Sentencing will occur soon, followed by her appeal.
