On Saturday, South Lake Tahoe experienced sudden and severe weather after a calm morning. Winds picked up dramatically from 5-10 mph to 35-45 mph within just a few hours, leading to dangerous conditions on the lake. Although hundreds of sailors and anglers had ventured out, the weather turned perilous around 2 PM, with waves rising from calm to 8-10 feet in less than half an hour.
Joby Cefalu, a local fishing charter co-owner, warned about the rising chop, but many were caught off guard. Tragically, a boat capsized near DL Bliss State Park, resulting in the deaths of all eight passengers aboard, mostly from California and New York. Rescue efforts managed to save some individuals but many suffered from hypothermia due to the cold water.
Mayor Tamara Wallace described the day as the worst she had seen on the lake, praising responders and bystanders who aided in rescue attempts. The storm was unexpected, with meteorologists noting its rapid onset and localized nature, making it difficult to predict. Officials stressed the importance of monitoring weather conditions while boating, especially in such unpredictable environments.
By the evening, conditions had improved, but the community was left grappling with the tragic loss and extensive damage to local boats and infrastructure. Wallace urged boaters to prioritize safety and awareness when navigating the area’s often volatile weather.
