British authorities are investigating two separate plots believed to involve British-Iranian citizens, potentially sponsored by the Iranian state. Over the weekend, eight individuals were arrested across the UK, including seven Iranian nationals. Three of these men were detained under the 2023 National Security Act on suspicion of preparing for terrorist acts.
While the two plots are not confirmed to be linked, officials are trying to determine whether they may be directed by the same entity. One plot has been described as targeting a specific site, although details remain undisclosed. Counterterrorism police are actively investigating, with Interior Secretary Yvette Cooper labeling the situation as a major operation and indicative of significant counterstate threats.
Historically, the Iranian government has targeted journalists and media linked to Iranian dissenters in the UK. Previous incidents include a failed assassination attempt against journalists from the network Iran International and other threats against Iranian expatriates. The UK has faced approximately 20 plots backed by Iran since 2022, emphasizing the regime’s strategy to intimidate critics and target Jewish or Israeli interests.
