A private plane crash in upstate New York on Saturday resulted in the deaths of all six people on board. Among the victims was Karenna Groff, a former MIT football player, who was traveling with her family to celebrate a holiday. The National Traffic Safety Board (NTSB) reported that the family members identified as victims included Karenna’s parents, Dr. Michael Groff and Dr. Joy Sani, her brother Jared Groff and his partner Alexia Couutas Duarte, and her partner James Santoro.
The NTSB noted that videos captured in the moments before the crash showed the aircraft descending rapidly. Dr. Groff, identified as the pilot, had a history of flying aircraft. The plane, a Mitsubishi MU-2B, was found severely damaged in an open field near Claryville, New York, after crashing around noon on its way to Columbia County Airport.
The NTSB’s Todd Inman mentioned that the pilots were operating under instrument flight rules and had not responded to any communication from Air Traffic Control. An investigation into the crash is ongoing, with the final report expected to take 12 to 24 months to complete. This incident follows another recent helicopter crash in New York that also resulted in six fatalities.
