Multnomah County and Portland have declared a state of emergency due to a severe heat wave, with temperatures expected to be at their highest this year. Two cooling centers will be open on Saturday, August 23rd, from noon to 9 PM, offering food, water, and a safe space for pets. Libraries in the area will extend hours until 8 PM to provide relief.

Public health officials warn of deteriorating air quality and advise residents to stay indoors, especially those in vulnerable populations. Mandatory wood-burning restrictions are in place to combat air pollution, with an Air Quality Advisory issued due to high ozone levels expected to persist until August 25th.

Emergency services have seen a spike in heat-related calls and hospital visits. Officials emphasize the importance of hydration and light clothing, advising residents to seek cooler environments if experiencing symptoms like rapid heartbeat or shortness of breath.

Multnomah County’s Emergency Management Director noted the value of cooling centers in past heat waves and urged residents to stay connected and check on vulnerable neighbors. For help locating cooling centers or transportation support, residents can call 211.
