A Rome tour guide is advocating for changes to summer opening hours at major attractions after the tragic death of Giovanna Maria Giamarino, who collapsed and died from suspected heart issues while guiding a group at the Colosseum. The incident highlights the growing concern over extreme heat affecting the well-being of guides and tourists alike.
The Italian Association of Certified Tour Guides (AGTA) has called for adjusted hours, proposing that the Colosseum area open from 7 AM to 8:15 PM during the summer. They argue that the current hours, which run from 8:30 AM to 7:15 PM, expose guides and visitors to dangerous heat during peak daytime hours.
AGTA stated that climate change is making such extreme conditions a norm, and they’ve been urging for these changes for three years to promote public health and well-being. The Colosseum authorities and Italian culture officials have expressed condolences and appreciation for Giamarino’s dedication. They are under pressure to reassess operational hours in light of these concerns, with discussions ongoing about enhancing protections and working conditions for guides.
