The family of Jabari Latrell Peoples, an 18-year-old fatally shot by a Homewood police officer, alleges that recently released body camera footage is an edited clip and demands access to unedited videos. Their attorney, Ben Crump, emphasized the need for transparency, stating that the family deserves to see all available footage surrounding the incident, which occurred on June 23 during an investigation of suspicious activity at Homewood Soccer Park.
District Attorney Danny Carr concluded that the officer’s actions were justified, stating that Peoples struggled with police and reached for a firearm during the encounter. However, the family contends that the footage shows Peoples being shot in the back while trying to escape, and they assert that he did not pose an immediate threat.
Despite the DA’s decision not to file charges against the officers, the family remains troubled by the six-week delay in releasing footage and questions the narrative provided by authorities. They seek to independently verify details of the incident, especially concerning claims that Peoples was armed.
Lawyers representing the family criticize the limited and potentially edited video presentation, suggesting it raises more questions than answers. Crump indicated that the fight for clarity and accountability continues, insisting that the case is not over despite official assertions.
