Residents in Buena Park, between Sheridan and Wilson, are expressing frustration over increased noise from trains since the removal of a “slow zone” last year. This change, aimed at improving train efficiency, has led to significant complaints about noise levels, with some measuring up to 100 dB in local parks and 75 dB inside homes, clearly exceeding normal living conditions.

A recent meeting with the CTA and local officials highlighted these concerns, with Ald. Angela Clay noting the noise disrupts residents’ enjoyment of outdoor spaces. Long-term residents report that while they were accustomed to noise, it has recently intensified to disruptive levels, prompting some to consider moving.

Despite residents’ requests for the CTA to reinstate the slow zone, officials have stated they will not slow down train speeds due to operational needs. The CTA is exploring other solutions like rail grinding to reduce noise, but federal funding issues have delayed larger reconstruction plans. The ongoing dialogue between residents and the CTA points to a community struggling with the consequences of modernization and seeking compromises for a better living environment.
