Waddy Alphayoumi, a 6-year-old Palestinian-American boy, was tragically murdered in a hate crime linked to rising anti-Muslim sentiments amid the ongoing Gaza War. His attacker, Joseph Chuba, 73, died in prison shortly after being sentenced to 53 years for murder and hate crimes. In October 2023, Chuba brutally stabbed Wadi 26 times and also injured his mother, Hanan Shaheen, whom he targeted due to their Muslim identity.
The incident, which unfolded on October 14, 2023, drew international attention, highlighting escalating violence against Muslims in the U.S. Chuba expressed his hatred regarding the Israel-Gaza conflict during the attack. Testimonies from Shaheen and Chuba’s ex-wife revealed his animosity towards Muslims. The prosecution’s evidence included distressing 911 calls and graphic crime scene photos.
The attack has resonated deeply within the established Palestinian community in Chicago, prompting tributes such as dedicating a playground in Wadi’s honor. Similar violent incidents against Palestinian-Americans have occurred in other states, reflecting a troubling trend of hate-driven violence.
