Work on upgrading one of Louisville’s busiest interchanges is set to begin this week, with lane closures affecting rush hour traffic. Nightly closures will occur from 7 PM to 5 AM between KY Highway 1447 (Westport Road) and Interstate 71 on both lanes of Interstate 264 (Watterson Expressway). An additional ramp closure will also take place from Watterson to I-71 north and south, though no specific times have been given.
Governor Andy Beshear announced a $130 million project aimed at increasing capacity on I-264, I-71, and US Highway 42 (Brownsboro Road). This initiative is intended to enhance travel safety and support future growth in the area.
Key improvements include reconstructing the I-264/US 42 interchange into a single point urban interchange (SPUI), extending pavement upgrades, and rebuilding the Brownsboro Road Bridge. This design will allow simultaneous left turns from conflicting directions, enhancing safety and efficiency.
Three new ramps will be added, and two lanes in each direction of I-264 will remain open during peak hours, although drivers should anticipate traffic changes and regular lane closures. The project is expected to be completed by fall 2027.
