Tropical depression Chantal brought severe flooding to central North Carolina on Sunday, prompting emergency declarations in Moore and Orange counties. Key highways, including parts of Interstate 40/85, were closed. Record flood levels were observed in Chatham and Alamance counties, with up to 8 inches of rain falling in just 12 hours.
Moore County was especially hard-hit, with two dams breached and multiple roads, including U.S. Highway 1, closed. In Southern Pines, significant damage occurred near a shopping center, although no injuries were reported. Rescues were conducted for people trapped in vehicles.
Chapel Hill experienced evacuations, including 20 residents from Camelot Village, which is prone to flooding. Some individuals encountered deep water unexpectedly, leading to vehicle damage.
Additionally, Sanford faced tornado threats, with several warnings issued across the region, though no injuries were confirmed. High rainfall caused concerns over dam overflow and pressure issues in water systems. Residents were advised to boil water until pressure normalized.
