The superyacht Bayesian, which sank off Sicily last August, has been successfully lifted from the water for further investigation. The recovery, conducted by TMC Maritime, involved complex procedures and began early Saturday. The vessel’s hull was covered in algae and mud but was visibly clean once raised.
The Bayesian sank while carrying Mike Lynch and others. Lynch, who was celebrating his recent acquittal from fraud charges, tragically lost his life along with six others; fifteen survived. Italian authorities are conducting a thorough criminal investigation into the incident.
The yacht was brought up from a depth of 50 meters using a steel lifting system, and seawater was pumped out to stabilize it. Notably, the yacht’s 72-meter mast was left on the seabed for future removal. Preliminary reports indicate extreme winds of over 70 knots contributed to the sinking, despite the crew choosing the location for shelter.
Lynch had previously sold his software company for $11 billion in 2011 and was acquitted of fraud just two months prior to the incident. The yacht is set to be transported to Termini Imerese for further investigations.
