A series of explosions in southwestern Colombia on Tuesday resulted in at least seven deaths and numerous injuries, with more than 20 reported attacks targeting police and civilians across several towns, including Cali. The Colombian National Police confirmed that two officers were among the fatalities, and the injuries included military personnel and civilians.
Authorities linked the attacks to the guerrilla group Mayor Estado Central, although the group has not claimed responsibility. The Colombian Army reported thwarting six additional attacks and apprehending two suspects preparing explosives. Local officials, including Cali’s mayor, emphasized the attacks’ intent to instill fear and destabilize urban safety, echoing memories of Colombia’s violent past.
Colombian Vice-President Francia Marquez Mina condemned the violence, urging for a response to the escalation in terror. The attacks coincided with a major biodiversity meeting, highlighting the government’s attempt to project stability. President Gustavo Petro has called for investigations into related incidents, including a recent shooting targeting prominent political figures.
