A tragic fire in a multi-story apartment building in Milwaukee’s Concordia area early on May 11th resulted in four deaths and numerous injuries. The Milwaukee Fire Department reported that around 30 fire trucks responded to the blaze, which broke out before 8 a.m. Firefighters rescued 30 occupants using ladders, while residents described seeing others escape and some even jump from upper floors.
The building, constructed before 1974, lacked a working sprinkler system, which, according to fire officials, could have helped prevent the tragedy. Hundreds were evacuated, and the Red Cross is assisting displaced residents. Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson expressed sorrow for the victims and praised first responders. Investigations into the fire’s cause are ongoing, highlighting ongoing concerns about building safety codes.
