Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara announced that a suspect was arrested Thursday in connection with a recent shooting incident that left three individuals dead and two others hospitalized. The suspect was detained near the Cedar River and is believed to be responsible for a shooting on Tuesday that targeted a 34-year-old man. The victims included a 17-year-old boy, a 20-year-old woman, and a 27-year-old man.
O’Hara indicated that while they do not rule out the potential involvement of others, they believe this suspect is primarily responsible. Additional incidents occurred Wednesday, including a fatal shooting of a man in his 30s and another man in his 50s who was found injured and later died in the hospital. Authorities do not believe any of the shootings were random.
Concerns were raised about the impact of gunfire on community safety, especially given the presence of children nearby during one incident. Although the names of the victims have not been released, O’Hara and Minneapolis mayor Jacob Frey expressed solidarity with the Native American community, noting that some victims were likely Indigenous.
In light of the violence, planned celebrations for American Indian Month were cancelled, with community organizations instead holding a service to commemorate the victims. The police department has increased patrols in the area and is working with community leaders to address urgent needs for trauma response. O’Hara emphasized the importance of collaboration between law enforcement and community members to address public safety concerns.
