A major power outage disrupted train services and airports in Spain and Portugal on Monday. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez declared a state of emergency, which remains in effect. As of today, 99.16% of electricity has been restored in Spain, and Portugal’s recovery is complete. However, the travel chaos continues due to cancelled and delayed flights.
Airports are operational, utilizing backup generators, but ongoing delays persist from the previous day’s disruptions. More than 500 flights were cancelled, with Lisbon particularly hard-hit; around 45% of its departures were grounded. Travelers are advised to check flight statuses and airline policies regarding compensation for delays or cancellations, especially if their situation qualifies under the “denied boarding rule.”
Train services are gradually resuming, although many trains in Spain were initially halted, requiring emergency rescues for stranded passengers. Madrid’s urban train services are operating at half capacity, while high-speed routes have returned to normal. Likewise, the Lisbon Metro has reopened, with minor delays.
EasyJet and other airlines are offering free transfers or vouchers for affected passengers. Additionally, issues arose with Airbnb rentals due to electronic locks failing during the blackout.
Despite some power restoration, the prolonged impact continues to affect travel plans across both nations.
