Hungary has officially withdrawn from the International Criminal Court (ICC), as confirmed by a senior official in Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s government. This decision came shortly after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to Hungary, which coincided with an ICC arrest warrant against him for alleged war crimes during the Israel-Hamas conflict. Orban had previously expressed his support for Netanyahu, claiming the ICC’s warrant “has no effect” in Hungary and labeling the court as a “political court.”
The ICC, which prosecutes serious international crimes such as genocide and crimes against humanity, issued the warrant based on what it deemed a “reasonable basis” for criminal liability concerning actions taken by Israeli leaders during the conflict with Hamas.
