Kevin Willard, the head coach of Maryland’s basketball team, has accepted an offer to become the next head coach at Villanova, following a week of speculation. An official announcement is expected soon. Under Willard, Maryland recently had a successful season, finishing with a 27-9 record and reaching the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament. Willard spent three seasons at Maryland, achieving a 65-39 record and making two NCAA tournament appearances.
Before the Sweet 16 matchup against Florida, Willard expressed concerns about the need for fundamental changes within the program, particularly regarding NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) issues. He stated he was uncertain about his future after the loss to Florida and had not spoken to his agent or his wife about his next steps.
At Villanova, Willard will replace Kyle Neptune, who failed to lead the team to the NCAA Tournament during his three seasons. Willard previously coached at Seton Hall for 12 years, achieving notable success, and also served on the coaching staff at Iona and under Rick Pitino with Louisville and the Boston Celtics. Willard’s hiring marks his return to the Big East, where he has extensive experience.
