Just Stop Oil (JSO), a climate activist group known for its disruptive direct action tactics, has announced it will disband at the end of April. The group has received significant criticism for its controversial actions, which have included throwing soup at artwork and blocking major roads, leading to public backlash and political opposition. Despite this, JSO claims to have achieved its initial goal of influencing government policy against new oil and gas licenses, marking itself as a successful civil resistance campaign.

The organization, which emerged from Extinction Rebellion, has experienced internal debates over its confrontational tactics. In light of recent stricter laws against protests and many members facing legal repercussions, including jail time, some activists are contemplating a shift towards more covert strategies. A new faction is reportedly planning sabotage against fossil fuel infrastructure. JSO’s leadership maintains that their core principles remain, emphasizing responsibility for their actions. While they claim their upcoming protests will be their last, members hint at potentially continuing their activism under a different name with new objectives.
