The I-435 bridge at Shawnee Midland Drive has reopened after a three-month winter break, with road closures impacting nearby businesses and raising concerns among locals. The closure of Midland Drive at I-435, along with the ramp from I-435 to Midland Drive, is expected to last until November as work continues on the bridge. The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) had previously announced an 18-month reconstruction project, which faced criticism from local establishments like Rize N Shine and Barley’s Kitchen and Tap for its adverse effects on business.
The project is currently in its third phase, focusing on improvements to the southbound I-435/Midland Drive Bridge. Road closures include Midland Drive between Renner and Elmridge Roads, but access to the Shawnee Mission Parkway remains open. Detours are provided for drivers, and city officials are collaborating with businesses to help attract customers and inform them about alternate routes.
Despite adjustments made by some businesses, including Barley’s Kitchen and Tap, there have been notable declines in late-night traffic and overall patronage. Efforts are underway to rekindle support for the businesses affected by the construction, especially with spring, a peak time for events and gatherings, approaching. Shawnee officials are planning to renew advertising efforts to promote local businesses and emphasize community support during this period of disruption.
