Dubai-based airline Career Emirates (EK) is investing approximately $5 billion to remodel existing aircraft in response to supply chain disruptions in the aviation industry. During a meeting in Berlin, President Tim Clark discussed the airline’s Retrofit Program, which aims to enhance operational efficiency amidst ongoing manufacturing delays. The initiative focuses on upgrading iconic aircraft models, such as the Airbus A380 and Boeing 777, with new cabin interiors and critical system improvements at Dubai’s engineering facilities.
The delay in the delivery of Boeing’s 777X due to pending certification has intensified the urgency for airlines to modernize their fleets. While Emirates is also considering the Airbus A350-1000, Clark emphasized the need for proven engine reliability from Rolls-Royce before finalizing the order.
Clark also revealed communication challenges with Boeing, citing the cancellation of a meeting with Boeing executives and expressing the need for internal restructuring at Boeing to regain past excellence. He described the current aerospace environment as “unknown territory” and voiced concern over the potential negative impacts of international tariffs on consumer travel demand. However, he remains optimistic about a diplomatic solution that could restore balance to international trade.
