North Carolina basketball coach Hubert Davis has received a two-year contract extension, extending his deal through the 2029-30 season. Alongside Davis, the program has also appointed Jim Tanner as the first executive director and general manager, reflecting the changes in university athletics. Davis’s new contract, first reached in July and signed in December, will increase his base salary significantly from $400,000 to $1.25 million annually, amounting to an average salary of $3.2 million, with additional compensation from various agreements.
Davis, who played for the Tar Heels and was previously an assistant coach, took over as head coach in 2021 after Roy Williams retired. His coaching tenure has seen highs and lows, including a run to the NCAA title game in his first season but missing the tournament as a preseason No. 1 in his second year. This season, the team began the year ranked 9th but struggled initially before recovering to make a push for the NCAA tournament.
Davis highlighted the need for adaptation to the evolving landscape of college sports, advocating for a professional-style management approach. Tanner, a former UNC player and experienced basketball agent, will support the program’s roster development, contract negotiations, and hiring of new staff in analytics and scouting. His extensive experience is expected to address the complexities of the current college athletics environment. Tanner expressed enthusiasm for his new role within the UNC community.
