Former French surgeon Joel Le Scouarnec, aged 74, faces trial for allegedly abusing or raping 299 patients, primarily children under the age of 15, between 1989 and 2014. During the proceedings, Le Scouarnec acknowledged his “despicable behavior” and expressed understanding for the suffering of his victims, admitting to the consequences of his actions. He has been imprisoned since 2017 for previous convictions involving child abuse.
Many victims, some of whom have no memories of the abuse due to being under anesthesia, became known to authorities through a detailed journal he allegedly kept, documenting the assaults. The trial, noted as the largest child abuse case in French history, has drawn hundreds of victims, represented by numerous lawyers, to the courtroom, while others had to wait in an overflow room.
Some victims and their families spoke about the lasting trauma caused by the abuse, with one grandmother expressing that her grandson’s suicide was a direct result of Le Scouarnec’s actions. The presiding judge highlighted the credibility of Le Scouarnec’s journal, noting the disturbing details found within.
Demonstrations took place outside the courthouse, with protesters advocating against a “circle of silence” that allowed Le Scouarnec to continue his practice despite previous warnings and concerns raised by authorities. The trial is anticipated to continue through June, and while some sessions will be closed to the public, others will allow for media attendance. The case has triggered extensive discussions about failures within the medical and legal systems in addressing abuse.
