Islands have historically served as crucial sites for the study of evolution and ecology, but recent research from the University of Birmingham reveals that many observed biodiversity patterns are heavily influenced by human activity over thousands of years.

The study highlights that while islands represent a small fraction of Earth’s land area, they host about 75% of human-induced extinctions. For example, Hawaii has witnessed the extinction of its native bird species, with a corresponding number of non-native species being introduced.

The findings suggest that biodiversity patterns like species richness and ecological interactions are not solely a result of natural processes but are significantly shaped by human impacts, including extinctions and species introductions.

One intriguing conclusion is that invasive species can obscure true ecological damage. Although introduced species may maintain total species counts, they often replace vital native species and the ecological roles they play, leading to a loss of biodiversity.

Co-author Sandra Noguet notes a growing homogenization of island ecosystems, where unique native species are replaced by widely introduced species, undermining the islands’ scientific appeal.

The study also emphasizes knowledge gaps in understanding past biodiversity, particularly for less-studied species. Researchers propose using a variety of methods—like fossil analysis and ancient DNA—to better reconstruct historical biodiversity.

Overall, this research has significant implications for conservation strategy, as recognizing the blend of natural and human impact is essential for effective preservation efforts. The study was published in Science Advances.
