In Madison, Wisconsin, protests have erupted following the police shooting of Corey Lewis, a 30-year-old community member, who was killed during an altercation with officers. Authorities revealed that Lewis was shot after pulling a knife during a scuffle with four officers. At a press conference, Police Chief John Patterson called it an “open and aggressive homicide investigation,” and promised accountability, although tensions flared as protesters interrupted the event with demands for justice against police brutality.
Mayor Satya Rose-Conway stressed that no one should lose their life in police encounters and emphasized the need for a thorough investigation. Lewis had a criminal history, including numerous misdemeanors and felonies related to robbery, drug possession, and resisting law enforcement. Community organizer Jazzman Brown, who knew Lewis for over 20 years, described him as a loving father and friend and organized a vigil in his memory.
The incident began when officers responded to reports of bike thefts, and after a brief chase, Lewis was confronted, during which he injured an officer before being shot. The investigation is being led by the state Department of Justice’s Criminal Investigation Division, and details regarding the officer involved will be released soon.
