The European Union and Britain have imposed new sanctions on Russian military intelligence officers, hackers, and companies linked to cyber espionage aimed at destabilizing European governments. The EU’s decision targets nine individuals and four organizations involved in an online spying network that has been active since 2010, affecting various countries, including Germany, France, Poland, and Finland. The UK has sanctioned 24 entities, focusing on the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) for its control over multiple cyber threat groups.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Karas stated that these actions are part of Russia’s efforts to undermine the EU and its partners. Notably, sanctions include asset freezes and travel bans, specifically on Evgeny Bashev, alleged leader of the cyber operations, and his company, Impulse, which recruits hackers from Russian educational institutions.
Germany and France have reacted by summoning Russian diplomats, emphasizing concerns over cyberattacks that threaten critical infrastructure such as railways and heating plants. The UK has echoed these sentiments, warning that Russian intelligence is using cybercriminals to gather intelligence that supports military objectives, posing a significant security threat across Europe.
