In recent weeks, Russia has intensified its attacks on Ukraine, exploiting weaknesses in Ukraine’s air defense systems. Shortly after Ukraine and nine European countries formed an air defense coalition to address the ballistic missile threat from Russia, a new missile strike targeted Kiev, causing fires in the city. This escalation has resulted in casualties on both sides, with nine people reported dead from over the weekend’s attacks.
A meeting in Paris focused on supporting Ukraine and pressing Russia to resolve the conflict, which has now lasted five years. The coalition aims to create a new, cost-effective anti-ballistic missile system to supplement existing ones like the US Patriot system. Leaders from Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Ukraine, and the UK emphasized the need for a comprehensive missile defense architecture to deter future threats.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy urged allies for more weaponry and collaboration on a joint defense system. Despite successful drone strikes by Ukraine on Russian targets, retaliatory missile and drone attacks from Russia have escalated against civilian areas, leading to numerous deaths.
President Zelenskiy highlighted that enhancing Ukraine’s missile defense capabilities would compel Russia to negotiate, stating that the new Freya project is intended to complement, not replace, existing systems. At the meeting, French President Emmanuel Macron announced a new arms deal with Ukraine, including 16 Rafale fighter jets, alongside plans for multinational military exercises in neighboring countries, aimed at preparing for post-ceasefire operations.
