Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell provided a health update after several weeks in the hospital following a fall on June 14. At 84, McConnell noted that his limited mobility is partly due to polio he contracted as a child. While the fall did not result in broken bones or a concussion, he developed pneumonia, which required extended hospitalization. He is now in a rehabilitation center and plans to return to his Senate work soon.
In his statement, McConnell expressed gratitude for the public’s concern and acknowledged the challenges of aging. He confirmed that doctors ruled out serious issues such as a heart attack or stroke but advised him to avoid the Senate floor for now. He remains involved in legislative work from a distance, collaborating with staff on ongoing matters and promising to address “unfinished business” before retiring at the end of his term in January.
His doctor added that McConnell’s recent falls may be linked to post-polio symptoms but stated he is now on a path to recovery, focusing on physical therapy to improve his mobility and reduce future fall risks.
