Massachusetts State Police evacuated the Charles River Esplanade, where thousands gathered for the Boston Pops Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular, due to a storm. The evacuation occurred just before 6:30 p.m. and lasted about 40 minutes. Attendees quickly returned to their seats, but the concert and fireworks, scheduled for 7 p.m. and 9:15 p.m., respectively, were delayed.
The announcement coincided with a press event featuring actress Jane Lynch, Governor Maura Healey, and conductor Keith Lockhart. Earlier, organizers pushed back the opening time for the lawn due to heat concerns, yet thousands rushed in once it opened.
This year’s concert includes guest artists Chance the Rapper, Laney Wilson, and Trombone Shorty, with a notable change in the fireworks finale. The Boston Pops will debut a revolutionary-themed drone show during the “1812 Overture” and choreograph fireworks to live performances, including pieces by John Williams and a world premiere titled “The Spirit of America.”
Public access to the lawn began at 4 p.m., and the MBTA offered free transportation starting at 8:30 p.m., with additional trains running to accommodate holiday travelers. If fireworks were delayed, commuter trains would depart up to 30 minutes afterward. The Lego Group was also set to create giant American flags from local bricks at four libraries.
