The recent World Cup generated excitement among U.S. soccer fans, even as a poll indicates that most Americans remain indifferent to the sport. Conducted by Ipsos Sports after the U.S. advanced to the knockout round, the poll showed that around 60% of soccer fans are “very” or “extremely” excited about the team’s progress, compared to only 25% of all Americans feeling similarly.
While many fans praised the U.S. Men’s National Team’s performance, with 55% rating it as “very well,” enthusiasm for FIFA’s organizational efforts was less favorable, with only about a third of fans expressing positive views. Despite the World Cup’s potential to boost interest in soccer, only 20% of Americans identify as soccer fans, trailing behind other sports.
The poll revealed that while many anticipate the World Cup will spark greater interest in soccer among Americans, personal excitement remains low, with only 17% expressing strong enthusiasm for upcoming matches. Engagement with the event has been noted, as around 40% of adults used social media to follow the games, and 20% attended watch parties or bought merchandise.
The Ipsos poll surveyed 1,027 adults, showing a 3.5% margin of error. Overall, while the World Cup has energized dedicated soccer fans, converting the broader American public into soccer enthusiasts remains a significant challenge.
