Climate scientists have detected the effects of climate change in recent heatwaves across Europe, where temperatures have soared past 104°F, reaching nearly 111°F in southwestern France. An analysis by World Weather Attribution found that such high temperatures were “virtually impossible” 50 years ago. While it’s uncertain if New England’s current heatwave has a similar profile, experts suggest that climate change has significantly influenced heat events in recent years.
Scientists attribute the increasing frequency and intensity of heatwaves to human-induced global warming, driven by fossil fuel use. A heat dome, akin to being covered by layers of blankets, has trapped heat over both Europe and North America. Moreover, the worsening of heatwaves is compounded by ocean heatwaves—rising sea temperatures contribute to increased heat and humidity.
However, Europe faces a historically unprecedented level of heat, with a much higher expected death toll compared to New England, largely due to differences in access to air conditioning. Experts estimate that extreme heat contributes to about 10,000 deaths annually in the U.S., compared to over 60,000 in Europe during the intense summer of 2022. In Massachusetts, about 90% of homes have air conditioning, whereas only around 20% of European homes do.
The upcoming El Niño weather pattern may lead to more heatwaves later in the summer in New England, but experts caution that its immediate impact might be limited. As temperatures rise, awareness of the risks associated with heat is crucial, particularly for those without adequate cooling resources.
