Many critics labeled this acknowledgment as a “woke” gesture, questioning its sincerity given the center’s location on land deemed “stolen.”
Valerie Jarrett, former senior adviser to Obama, initiated the acknowledgment by honoring the Anishinaabe, Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi nations. However, responses on social media criticized the gesture’s authenticity. Conservative commentators, including Glenn Beck, mocked the Obama Foundation for acknowledging the land’s history while still profiting from it, suggesting that true restitution should involve returning the land.
The center features displays that acknowledge Indigenous peoples and their history, including quotes from President Obama regarding broken treaties and lost lands. Despite the criticisms, the weekend included vibrant performances and exhibits promoting Native American culture.
