Adventureland amusement park operated normally Saturday after firefighters and police rescued 16 people stranded on the Wave Twister ride Friday night, most of whom were children. The ride was subsequently closed until further notice. Firefighters arrived around 8 p.m. and used a cherry picker to safely lower the passengers from about 50 feet in the air, with the last child rescued just after 10:30 p.m. Initial reports indicated no injuries.
East Farmingdale Fire Department Chief James Quinn Jr. led the specialized rescue team, noting that the ride’s location made access difficult. The ride had experienced mechanical issues, with the brakes reportedly locking up.
Concerned parents waited anxiously as their children were rescued, with some reporting that their kids had been stranded for two hours. Adventureland’s spokesman acknowledged the situation and stated that the ride will remain closed pending further investigation. The Wave Twister, which debuted recently as part of a redevelopment project, had previously caused concerns due to earlier breakdowns.
The park emphasized its commitment to safety and satisfaction, promising a thorough review of the incident.
