Cleanup is underway in the Chicago area after strong thunderstorms produced at least two tornadoes on Thursday. The National Weather Service plans to assess damage in Streator, Naperville, Bartlett, and northwest Indiana. Thunderstorms left over 170,000 customers without power, with significant outages in northwest Indiana.
In Streator, the tornado destroyed several homes, prompting a state of emergency for the town of 12,000 residents. No fatalities have been reported, but injuries are still being assessed. Shelters have been established by the Red Cross and local officials for those affected.
The storm damaged Adrian High School in Merrillville, halting school operations temporarily. As crews work to clear debris and inspect damage, residents are urged to avoid downed power lines and damaged infrastructure. Reports indicated winds reached up to 160 mph in the area.
