Light rail ridership in Seattle surged dramatically following the March 28 expansion of Line 2, which connects Bellevue and Seattle across Lake Washington. In April, ridership reached 4.8 million, a 44% increase from March, making Seattle’s light rail system the busiest in the U.S., surpassing cities like Los Angeles, Boston, and San Diego. Daily unlinked trips approached 160,000, placing Seattle as the eighth-busiest rail system in the country—an impressive feat for a city with the 15th largest urban population.
Despite its success, Seattle has plans for further expansion, aiming for a system that can accommodate 650,000 daily passengers by the 2040s. However, budget constraints have led to some project postponements, including the Ballard Link connection. While new routes are delayed, Sound Transit anticipates that ridership will continue to grow due to factors such as network effects and population increases.
Seattle’s Link Light Rail is expected to keep evolving, with additional bus services to enhance connectivity to light rail stations. The system reached a notable 205,000 riders on its opening day, indicating strong public interest. Future expansions and service improvements could further boost ridership in the coming years.
