A woman, Rebecca A. Lang, 44, has died from injuries sustained in a May 22 assault in Portland, leading to murder charges against Roberto M. Velasquez, 64. Lang succumbed to her injuries in the hospital on June 3, with the medical examiner declaring her death a homicide caused by blunt force trauma. After her passing, the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office updated charges against Velasquez to include second-degree murder, first-degree assault, and unlawful use of a weapon, all related to domestic violence.
The assault occurred around 6:07 p.m. on May 22, when witnesses reported seeing Lang injured on the sidewalk on Northwest Naito Parkway. Nearby residents rendered aid until emergency responders arrived, with initial reports indicating she had been struck with a blunt object.
The police quickly launched an investigation, establishing that Velasquez had entered a nearby apartment tied to him. He surrendered to a special response team later that night and was booked on charges including attempted second-degree murder. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are calling for any witnesses or evidence related to the incident.
