Houston’s Bush Airport will start screening passengers from specific African countries in response to an Ebola outbreak. Along with Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson and Dulles International, it will serve as an entry point for travelers from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, or South Sudan within the last 21 days. This screening begins for flights from Bush Airport on May 26.
Concerns arise particularly due to the upcoming FIFA World Cup, where the DRC national soccer team will be based in Houston. Health officials are monitoring the situation, emphasizing that while Ebola is deadly, it requires direct contact for transmission. Symptoms include fever, headache, and abdominal pain.
Experts warn the main risk isn’t the teams themselves, but potential infected travelers during the tournament. Although there are no approved treatments for the Bundibugyo strain, effective public health responses can reduce mortality significantly.
