Activists released from Israeli custody after attempting to deliver aid to Gaza reported mistreatment, with several hospitalized and at least 15 alleging sexual assaults, including rape. Israeli prisons have denied these allegations, stating that all detainees are treated in accordance with the law. Germany confirmed injuries among its citizens and noted some allegations were serious, while Italy’s prosecutors have opened investigations into possible crimes, including kidnapping and sexual assault.
The Israeli military detained around 430 individuals from 50 ships in international waters to prevent the aid delivery. Activists reported abuses such as being stripped, kicked, and shot with rubber bullets. Italian economist Luca Poggi described being assaulted and denied legal access. Italian, German, and French officials are addressing the situation, with some activists returning home injured and alleging serious abuse during their detention.
The allegations have prompted international scrutiny and calls for accountability, particularly after a video surfaced of Israel’s security minister mocking an activist in prison. Italy’s Foreign Minister announced discussions among EU states for possible sanctions against the minister.
