Preliminary approval has been granted for a major overhaul of Logan Airport’s outdated Terminal C, aiming to create a modern, light-filled space akin to European airports. The project, expected to exceed $1 billion and span four years, will feature high ceilings, skylights, reconfigured seating, new gates, and enhanced shopping and dining options. Massport CEO Rich Davey emphasized that the renovation is not just about adding gates but accommodating contemporary passenger flows, as the current terminal was designed for 1960s traffic.
Primarily used by JetBlue and other airlines, the terminal’s redesign was initially considered pre-pandemic but gained urgency with rising passenger numbers. The plans include demolishing two outdated “hammerheads” and replacing them with a new hexagonal terminal for improved efficiency. JetBlue will collaborate with Vantage Airport Group on the construction, which they will finance and later lease from Massport.
Despite financial struggles, JetBlue remains committed to Boston, emphasizing the strong market potential there. The renovation aims to improve passenger experience and reduce idling emissions from airplanes. The project is slated to break ground in about a year, with minimal disruption expected for travelers.
