Southwest Airlines has banned human-like and animal-like robots from flying after an incident where a robot named Stewie boarded a flight from Dallas to Las Vegas. The Robot Studio, which owns Stewie, had taken care to ensure compliance with FAA regulations regarding lithium-ion batteries. Despite the measures taken, Southwest updated its policies to prohibit any humanoid or animal-like robots in carry-on or checked baggage, emphasizing safety concerns. The company’s owner, Aaron Mehdizadeh, expressed optimism about the future of robots and AI, while Pushkar Shinde, CTO of The Robot Company, likened the current views on robots to early perceptions of cars in the 1920s, suggesting that the industry is still in its infancy and largely for entertainment.
