The Pittsburgh Pirates are set to recall outfielder Jostinkson Garcia from Triple-A Indianapolis, with an official announcement expected soon. This move comes after infielder/outfielder Nick York was optioned to Indianapolis. Garcia, 23, was acquired from the Red Sox in an offseason trade and was initially seen as a top prospect. Despite a strong spring training performance, he started the season in the minors to gain regular playing time.
Garcia struggled initially this season but rebounded with an impressive performance in Triple-A, including a five-hit game and three home runs. The Pirates have had a rough stretch lately, losing three straight games to the Philadelphia Phillies and dropping to just above .500.
With O’Neal Cruz and Ryan O’Hearn also in the outfield, Garcia is likely to take over O’Hearn’s spot while he is on injured reserve. His performance could influence the team’s decisions on other outfielders, especially struggling veteran Marcell Ozuna. García’s major league debut last year consisted of just nine at-bats, and with control over his contract until 2032, the Pirates have time to develop him further.
