A Utah judge, Tony Graf Jr., has ruled against Tyler Robinson’s request for a blanket ban on media reporting in the courtroom during the preliminary hearing for the murder case of Charlie Kirk. While denying the media restriction, Graf postponed the hearing from May 18 to July 6 to allow for further review of evidence, as prosecutors still needed to provide extensive discovery materials.
Robinson, facing the death penalty for Kirk’s murder at a rally in September, argued that media coverage was causing misinformation that could affect juror impartiality. The judge acknowledged these concerns but stated that measures were in place to protect private conversations in the courtroom.
Robinson’s request to exclude media from parts of the hearings and limit hearsay evidence is still pending, and his attorneys will reconvene with Graf on May 19. Prosecutors allege Robinson confessed to the crime in various communications.
