The Onion has reportedly acquired Alex Jones’ far-right media outlet InfoWars after a lengthy two-year negotiation process. The announcement was made by Onion CEO Ben Collins, who revealed the acquisition was facilitated with the help of families impacted by the Sandy Hook tragedy.
The path to this deal began when Global Tetrahedron, LLC, made an initial offer to buy InfoWars in 2024 following Jones’ bankruptcy due to significant damages awarded to Sandy Hook parents for defamation. A previous auction was stalled due to transparency issues.
Now, The Onion plans to license InfoWars from a court-appointed administrator, pending approval from Texas Judge Maya Guerra Gamble. This arrangement allows for a six-month license, with an option to renew, costing $81,000 monthly.
The aim is to transform InfoWars into a parody of far-right conspiracy outlets. Comedian Tim Heidecker has been appointed as the creative director, expressing a mix of excitement and uncertainty about the role. There are plans to sell merchandise with proceeds benefiting the Sandy Hook families.
The Onion’s leadership expressed pride in this project as a way to use humor to address serious issues, while also highlighting the collaborative effort of their team in pursuit of the vision.
