The New Jersey Devils announced the hiring of Sunny Mehta as their sixth general manager. Managing Partner David Blitzer expressed excitement about Mehta’s appointment, highlighting his familiarity with the organization and experience from a two-time Stanley Cup-winning team. Mehta, a New Jersey native, described the role as a dream come true, thanking the Florida Panthers for his previous six years there.
Mehta, 48, previously served as the Florida Panthers’ assistant general manager and head of analytics, contributing to their back-to-back Stanley Cup victories in 2024 and 2025. He has a strong background in player evaluation and analytics, having been part of the Devils’ front office from 2014 to 2018. He later consulted for teams like the Washington Capitals and Phoenix Coyotes.
A graduate of the University of Miami with a master’s in data science, Mehta also has a unique background in music and poker, having authored bestselling books on poker strategy. He grew up in New Jersey, played varsity hockey in high school, and has now returned to lead the Devils in their quest for playoff success.
