Lihue Airport in Kauai has long needed improvements, and after a previously rejected expansion plan in 2022, the state Department of Transportation proposed a more modest approach to renovations. The new plan features 30 projects focused on addressing current deficiencies without adding new gates or expanding the airport’s footprint.
Ongoing upgrades include curbside construction, restroom renovations, and improvements to the baggage system. A key aspect of the plan is the Consolidated Rental Car Complex (ConRAC), intended to centralize car rental services and free up valuable airport land for necessary public parking and other uses.
Public comments on the new plan are open until April 17th, and a second round of meetings is planned for summer 2026. The optimization plan aims to enhance the visitor experience at Lihue Airport while addressing long-standing complaints about overcrowding and inadequate facilities, framing changes around current needs rather than future tourist growth.
As renovations are already underway, the state hopes to improve operations while managing the existing passenger traffic effectively. The effectiveness of this new approach in gaining public support remains to be seen.
