A recent study by Andrea Marinoni from the University of Cambridge reveals that data centers, essential for powering artificial intelligence, significantly affect local climates by creating “heat islands.” These centers, which have proliferated globally, can increase surrounding land temperatures by an average of 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit, with extremes reaching up to 16.4 degrees. The study analyzed temperature data from over 6,000 data centers, particularly those away from urban influences, revealing consistent temperature rises worldwide, including notable changes in areas like Mexico’s BajÃo region and Aragon, Spain.
The temperature increases impact regions up to 10.9 miles away, affecting over 340 million people. This finding is concerning, particularly as data center expansion continues amid already intensifying heatwaves linked to climate change. Experts, including Deborah Andrews, highlight the importance of addressing the environmental impact of these facilities amid the rush for AI advancements.
While some researchers call for more investigation into these results, others emphasize that the emissions related to data center energy consumption remain a critical issue. Marinoni advocates for discussions on mitigating the environmental impacts while meeting the growing demands for AI technologies.
